How the Porsche Taycan's Battery Technology Sets It Apart from Other Electric Cars

The Porsche Taycan is the first all-electric sports car from the legendary German automaker, and it has been making waves in the automotive industry with its impressive performance, design and technology. One of the most innovative features of the Taycan is its battery technology, which enables it to achieve high levels of power, efficiency and range.

The Taycan is the first production vehicle with a system voltage of 800 volts, instead of the usual 400 volts for electric cars. This means that the Taycan can charge faster, use less weight and space for the cabling, and deliver consistent high performance. The Performance Battery Plus is standard on the Taycan Turbo S and Taycan Turbo models, and optional on the Taycan and Taycan 4S models. The Performance Battery Plus consists of 33 cell modules, each containing 12 individual pouch cells. The pouch cells are a type of lithium-ion battery that have a flexible composite foil housing, instead of a rigid metal casing. This allows them to fit better in the rectangular space available for the battery, and to reduce weight.

The battery is located in the underbody of the Taycan, ensuring a low centre of gravity and a sporty driving experience. The battery housing is a load-bearing component of the body structure, and it protects the cooling and electronic components from environmental influences. The battery also features foot garages, which are recesses in the rear footwell that provide more comfort for the rear passengers and allow for a lower vehicle height.

The battery is integrated into the vehicle's cooling circuit via a line system and a coolant pump. It can be cooled or heated to operate in an optimal temperature range. The cooling elements are placed outside the actual battery box and are glued to its underside to allow heat transfer. The battery also works with a heat pump that permits intelligent functions such as pre-conditioning the battery before charging or driving, or using waste heat from the powertrain to heat the cabin.
