A Lamborghini used to have three driving modes to chose from. Strada, for the street; Sport, for when you want to have fun on the street; and Corsa for track driving. The new Lamborghini Aventador S adds another mode: Ego. Yes, it's really called that. It's an almost hilariously appropriate mode for a Lamborghini, the sort of car that caters to those who crave attention. In reality, Ego mode just means you can individually set the transmission, steering and suspension behavior to suit your individual tastes. Maybe you want a softer ride but tighter steering. Aside from that, the new Aventador S is much more than just another way to get people to look at you with that special Lamborghini-inspired mixture of envy and disdain. 420,000, has a number of improvements over the "regular," Lamborghini Aventador that it's replacing. Four-wheel-steering allows the car to feel smaller and even more agile. When driving slowly, as the front wheels turn toward one side, the back wheels will turn slightly toward the other, creating a teeny tiny turning circle.





At higher speeds, the front and back wheels will turn together for silky smooth lane changes. There is also an improved, variable four-wheel-drive system. It allows more power to go to the back wheels in the sport and track modes than in the normal street-driving mode. That lets a skilled driver deliberately slide the back end of the car around. It also gives the driver a better feel for the road, and what the car is doing on it, through the steering wheel. Another big improvement is to the transmission. It's still the single-clutch automatic transmission, as before. Mechanically, it works very much like a manual transmission except that it can shift gears on its own. Engineers have made some changes to the transmission's mechanical bits as well as to the software programming that runs it. The transmission had been a deal-killer issue for me in the old version. It worked great when you wanted to drive like you'd sworn not be taken alive.





When driven in a more sane fashion, it heaved and bucked with slow and awkwardly timed gearshifts. The retuned version in the Aventador retains the Lamborghini's aggressive character. In Strada, or street, mode getting going requires a forceful stab at the gas pedal which, after a pause, elicits a lurch forward. From then on, it's fairly smooth going. Even so, on public roads, I never kept this car in Strada mode for long. Sport mode uses more gas, but it's where this car feels most natural. And where its V12 engine sounds the best, belting out great, ripping internal combustion arias. With a zero-to-60 acceleration under three seconds, it is of course blisteringly quick and it feels nice going through a curve, too. It's still a beast but it now has a tamer side. It's a careful balancing act. Lamborghini, part of the Volkswagen Group (VLKPF), is working to make the brand somewhat more accessible with its upcoming Urus crossover SUV.

The verdict: The 2016 Porsche Macan S SUV is the apple that doesn鈥檛 fall far from the tree in Porsche鈥檚 repertoire, delivering a high-performance driving experience in an unlikely shape. Versus the competition: You can spend similar money on larger SUVs, but they can鈥檛 rival the 2016 Porsche Macan鈥檚 combination of athletic twin-turbo driving experience and luxuriously appointed interior. Porsche has been more than just a 鈥渃ar鈥?maker for years, since the introduction of its wildly popular Cayenne midsize SUV. Smaller doesn鈥檛 mean cheap, though, and the Porsche Macan doesn鈥檛 exactly have an apples-to-apples competitor, which makes it an interesting little SUV. 69,455 鈥?closer to the cost of midsize coupe-inspired SUVs such as the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE450 AMG Coupe. Still, Porsche鈥檚 signature exhaust symphony burbles through the tailpipes and sounds strikingly similar to any one of Porsche鈥檚 coupes. The standard exhaust system adjusts to deliver a more noticeable growl during higher engine loads and in Sport mode. Not all鈥檚 good in the neighborhood: There鈥檚 a slight lag in initial accelerator response when accelerating from a stop, even in Sport mode.





The delay isn鈥檛 very Porsche-like, and it鈥檚 annoying when you want to move from a stop with vigor. One area in which there isn鈥檛 much delay is the seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission鈥檚 shifts. This Porsche Doppelkupplung transmission shifts unbelievably quickly, with 911-like levels of shifting action in automatic mode and from the steering-wheel-mounted paddles. Given the Macan鈥檚 size, its EPA-estimated gas mileage is unimpressive at 17/23/19 mpg city/highway/combined. That鈥檚 closer to the larger BMW X6 xDrive35i (18/24/20 mpg) and GLE450 AMG Coupe (17/23/20 mpg) than it is to the X4鈥檚 19/27/22 mpg and the Evoque鈥檚 21/30/24 mpg. The Macan鈥檚 sport-tuned suspension is never uncomfortable like the rough-riding BMW, though I wouldn鈥檛 call the Macan 鈥渃omfortable鈥? our test car had standard coil springs and fixed-firmness shock absorbers. But a slightly busy ride at highway speeds is a completely fair tradeoff for how well the Macan handles, and a little body motion in aggressive cornering doesn鈥檛 take away too much from its dynamic personality. Adaptive shock absorbers with coil springs and an air suspension are options if you want to improve ride/handling characteristics.

Mazda revels in doing things a bit differently. By shying away from downsized petrol engines, for example, it sets itself apart from the plethora of mainstream brands. This is the all-new Mazda 3. It鈥檚 always been a stylish choice, but the fresh car stands out with sharp lights, neat lines and crisp detailing. When it goes on sale in the spring, it鈥檒l come as a five-door hatch or saloon, and with manual or automatic gearboxes and front or all-wheel drive. The engine line-up will comprise a 1.8-litre diesel, and a choice of 2.0-litre petrols in SkyActiv-G or SkyActiv-X guises. The latter will deliver around 180bhp, and brings unique Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI) - a clever innovation that promises diesel levels of torque, economy and emissions from a petrol engine. We鈥檒l need to wait to sample that, though, because our early drive was restricted to the standard 鈥楪鈥?2.0-litre petrol engine, linked to a six-speed manual transmission.





And drive is exactly what Mazda鈥檚 engineers want you to do, bucking the zeitgeist and focusing on handling rather than nannying driver aids and convenience features. To appeal to keener drivers, Mazda has undertaken exhaustive research into human movement, looking particularly at seating position and the connection the driver has with the car. The result is a superb driving environment. The cabin鈥檚 ergonomics are spot on, matched with improved material quality and a smart design. All controls are simple to operate. Mazda has removed the touchscreen capability from its central display, offering all operations within a BMW-style rotary dial with supplementary buttons. It鈥檚 easy to use, and allows Mazda to position the screen higher on the dash, thus enabling the driver to see it without having to take their eyes too far from the road. If there鈥檚 a complaint inside, it鈥檚 over-the-shoulder visibility. The thick C-pillars cause that, although the wide, frameless rear-view mirror and big hatch window do offer a better view directly out the back.





The boot is smaller than the outgoing model鈥檚 at 295 litres, too, which places it some way short of segment stalwarts such as the Volkswagen Golf (380 litres) and the Vauxhall Astra (370 litres). Rear seat space is acceptable rather than hugely accommodating, which might be an issue if you regularly carry passengers. Riding on an all-new SkyActiv structure, the car has benefited from a lot of attention on suppressing noise. Refinement has improved dramatically as a result, with the lack of road and wind noise bringing premium levels of refinement. The outgoing 3 was always an enjoyable car to drive, and the new version builds on that. The rear suspension might be less sophisticated, but you鈥檇 do well to notice it on the road. Body control is well judged, the Mazda 3 riding with composure. That鈥檚 been achieved with real connection, too - the steering offers decent feel and weight, delivering accuracy and response. It all feels very polished, in fact. If there鈥檚 a but, it鈥檚 the 118bhp 2.0-litre SkyActiv-G engine. Largely carried over from the current 3, it lacks the sort of low-rev torque many of its turbo rivals can deliver, so it needs to be worked hard. We reckon the car will be better served with the newer and more efficient SkyActiv-X unit, which we鈥檒l try next month.

The Macan鈥檚 bold styling takes a number of cues from the second-generation Cayenne, including a rather bluff front end that varies in look depending on engine. A large clamshell-style bonnet aids engine bay cooling and features oval-shaped cut-outs for the headlights, plus sides that run all the way down to the front bumpers. Predictably, the interior has an upmarket feel. The look again draws heavily on the Cayenne, but subtle changes help set the Macan apart, including a multi-function steering wheel similar to the 918 Spyder鈥檚. The rest is familiar, with a three-dial binnacle, touchscreen multimedia system and a high-set middle console housing a sea of switches. It looks cluttered, but the ergonomics are excellent. As for the standard equipment, the Turbo is available in two forms - standard and with Porsche鈥檚 Performance Package. The Macan Turbo rides on 19in alloy wheels, an aggressively-styled bodykit, adaptive bi-xenon headlights, electrically adjustable front sports seats, Alcantara roof lining, and a Bose sound system as standard.





The Performance Package adds not only more power to the Turbo, but also the optional Sports Chrono pack, which includes launch control and more extreme driving modes, adaptive dampers and a 15mm lower ride height. The Macan Turbo line-up consists of a twin-turbocharged 3.6-litre petrol engine that is described as being all new, although a naturally aspirated version of the same unit has appeared in the last-gen Panamera. While the Performance Package and the limited edition Exclusive Performance Edition helps the Turbo鈥檚 engine punch out 434bhp and an additional 37lb ft of peak twist. The Macan Turbo is pleasingly smooth, with an engine that pulls well from the front, is potent through the mid-range and accepting of high gears at low speeds. There鈥檚 some low-end lag, but the V6 is terrifically energetic on boost. With a short-stroke design, the engine also revs with great conviction for a forced-induction unit, rushing up to 6700rpm without feeling remotely breathless before hitting the limiter. It is just a pity that the new V6 sounds so characterless no matter which driving mode - Standard, Sport or Sport Plus - is chosen. There is an entertaining burble to the exhaust, but it is more often than not drowned out by excessive induction blare. You wouldn鈥檛 call it bland, but the noise is rather insipid. The engine impresses, but it鈥檚 the standard seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox that really shows its class. It is fast, smooth and intuitive and has the ability to perfectly match revs on downshifts. The four-wheel drive system directs torque to the rear wheels and, when the conditions call for it, to the fronts, giving the Macan a distinctly rear-drive bias.

East Coast Defender has made a name for itself by taking Land Rover Defenders and endowing them more power and classier interiors. The Florida-based company has returned with two new Defender D110s that utilize the same underpinnings, but couldn鈥檛 be more different. The two new SUVs include Project Venture, which joins the company under its Heritage Collection, and Project Dark Knight that鈥檚 classified as parts of East Coast Defender鈥檚 Custom Collection. We鈥檒l start with the latter of the two offerings. Project Dark Knight isn鈥檛 a machine to appease Batman fans. Instead, the name aptly describes the paint scheme the SUV is wearing. The custom Defender is finished in black eggshell, but also has Wolfrace Vermont polished 20-inch wheels, an external roll cage, LED spotlights, and a winch on the outside. Besides the shiny wheels, the SUV looks like a low-profile off-roader. Things are a little different on the inside, though.





The SUV features seating for six passengers thanks to gorgeous brown seats. There鈥檚 an elegant pattern on the seats that really makes the vehicle look upscale. The cabin looks fantastic, but the Momo Gotham steering wheel and center console look out of place. Still, it definitely looks comfortable. Under the hood, Project Dark Knight features a General Motors LC9 5.3-liter V8 engine that generates 320 horsepower. The engine is paired to a six-speed automatic gearbox. The Defender D110 that鈥檚 known as Project Venture is a little different. It looks larger than Project Dark Knight and more willing to get dirty. The SUV features a traditional exterior paint scheme, Keswick Green, and has a few extra components to make it more useful when the road gets tough. There鈥檚 an exterior roll cage with a roof rack, a rear ladder, black powder coated side steps, and, of course, a winch. If you thought a 5.3-liter V8 was impressive, Project Venture is powered by a 430-hp 6.2-liter V8 that鈥檚 matched to a six-speed automatic transmission. Once again, East Coast Defender has redone the interior, but it doesn鈥檛 look as opulent as the one in Project Dark Knight. Gray leather seats with green accents help add some color to the cabin, while a Momo Jet steering wheel, wireless charging, and a Sony infotainment system help usher it into modern times. Hyundai Group brands Hyundai, Kia and Genesis are set to benefit from a new electric car platform, similar to the Volkswagen Group鈥檚 MEB technology, while more radical designs for the brands鈥?dedicated EVs are promised, too. 鈥淎 new platform dedicated to electric vehicles is about two years away,鈥?a company insider revealed to Auto Express. Hyundai and Kia have already said they will have 38 green cars in their line-up by 2025, including 14 EVs. Premium brand Genesis is also expected to launch an all-electric car by 2021. Aston Martin Announces 拢30m Brexit Contingency Fund




Aston Martin is creating a 拢30m Brexit fund to ensure its business is not interrupted by the UK鈥檚 imminent departure from the EU. A sum of 鈥渦p to 拢30m of advanced working capital and/or operating expenses鈥?will be set aside in order to 鈥減rotect production and customer deliveries鈥? The news comes in the midst of a raft of warnings against a no deal Brexit from the automotive industry, particularly from large-volume manufacturers. In addition, Honda is shutting its Swindon plant - although it has been claimed this is unrelated to Brexit - and UK manufacturing has seen its eighth consecutive month of decline, with demand from China falling 72.3 per cent. Nevertheless, Aston Martin鈥檚 preliminary financial results show the brand enjoyed a 31 per cent boost in wholesale volumes in China last year and 44 per cent in the Asia-Pacific region as a whole. The premium manufacturer also saw a 17 per cent increase in UK wholesales, 13 per cent in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and 38 per cent in the Americas. Porsche recently confirmed the production version of the Mission E would be called the Taycan, and now the automaker has released additional information about its upcoming electric vehicle. Set to debut next year, the Taycan will have an 800 volt electrical system and two electric motors that produce a combined output in excess of 592 HP. This will enable it to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in less than 3.5 seconds and 0-200 km/h in less than 12 seconds. Furthermore, the model will have a range in excess of 500 km in the New European Driving Cycle. Despite their high-tech nature, the electric motors are relatively lightweight and compact. Porsche didn鈥檛 go into specifics, but said the motors have solenoid coils with a special hairpin design. The Taycan also features inverters that use a 鈥渟teplessly variable pulse frequency鈥?as well as a cooling system which works in real time. Speaking of the latter, Porsche says sensors constantly monitor cooling requirements and special software ensures water is immediately directed to the right spots when required.





Porsche has been relatively tight-lipped about the Taycan鈥檚 battery, although it revealed the lithium-ion unit has approximately four hundred cells, which are connected serially and in parallel, and each has a current of roughly 4 volts. The battery has an optimal operating temperature of between 20掳 and 40掳 C and it can be charged to provide a 400 km range in just 15 minutes. Speaking of charging, Porsche is part of a consortium of automakers that have teamed up to launch the Ionity joint venture. Since it will be awhile before the Taycan is launched, Porsche is extensively testing the model in extreme conditions. As an example, the automaker said 21 prototypes and sixty employees traveled to South Africa to test the car in temperatures of around 40掳 C. During that trip, the team logged approximately 40,000 km on the prototypes. By the time the Taycan is launched in late 2019, the prototypes will have logged 鈥渕illions of kilometers鈥?during testing. Porsche said it has already built over 100 prototypes. Although the company says the exact number is confidential, each was manufactured by approximately 40 specialists.





Infiniti QX70 review. The stylish Infiniti QX70 4x4 looks like nothing else on the road. It鈥檚 fair to say Nissan鈥檚 luxury brand, Infiniti, hasn鈥檛 been a huge success in the UK yet. However, this QX70 model is one of its better sellers. A rival to sporty 4x4s, such as the BMWX5 and PorscheCayenne, the QX70 blends a raised driving position with striking looks and offers greater exclusivity than any of its rivals. The QX70 is like the Tardis in reverse; it鈥檚 huge on the outside, but has a surprisingly small interior. While four adults can fit, those in the back can鈥檛 stretch out like they can in other big 4x4s. And the boot isn鈥檛 much bigger than a VW Golf鈥檚. More positively, there鈥檚 a decent amount of storage space around the driver, and the rear seats can be folded flat. Every QX70 has an electrically adjustable driver鈥檚 seat that makes it easy to get comfortable. Sadly, you won鈥檛 stay that way for long because the QX70 thumps over potholes. In fact, even on roads that look relatively smooth, you can feel the car shimmying around beneath you. Three engines are available: 3.7- and 5.0-litre petrols and a 3.0-litre diesel.





The petrols are smooth enough, but the diesel sounds a little gruff when you accelerate and it sends too much vibration into the car in stop-start traffic. It鈥檚 easy to adjust the cabin temperature or fan strength. Unfortunately, you have to stretch to reach the controls for the stereo and satellite-navigation. You sit high in the QX70, so get a good view of the road ahead. Sadly, there are big over-the-shoulder blind spots that make changing lanes tricky. The QX70 is also a very wide car and you can鈥檛 tell where its bonnet ends from the driver鈥檚 seat. These issues combine with heavy steering to make it tricky to drive in town. Whichever engine you choose, there鈥檚 no shortage of performance, and every model comes with an automatic gearbox and the reassurance of four-wheel drive. If you can put up with the QX70鈥檚 firm ride, you鈥檙e rewarded with good composure; it doesn鈥檛 lean much when you ask it to change direction and there鈥檚 a decent amount of grip.

New 2019 Audi E-tron Sportback




This is our first candid look at the new Audi e-Tron Sportback. The new coupe-inspired all-electric SUV looks to expand into the BMW X4 and Mercedes GLC Coupe鈥檚 market, offering a zero-emissions alternative. Audi鈥檚 new e-Tron Sportback will sit on the same underpinnings as the standard e-Tron, which uses an adapted version of the Volkswagen Group鈥檚 MLB platform. The same battery pack and charging system will also feature, following the e-Tron鈥檚 brief as a long-range all-electric car. We鈥檙e expecting the same range of at least 248 miles on the WLTP cycle, as well as a sophisticated energy recuperation system and support for 150kW fast-charging. However, given the slightly more aerodynamic rear end, the e-tron Sportback could boast a little extra range. Inside, the e-Tron Sportback will receive the same setup as the conventional e-Tron SUV with twin touchscreen controls and Audi鈥檚 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster as standard. Optional extras will include wing-mounted cameras in place of conventional rear-view mirrors and kerb cameras. Practicality will take a hit over the standard e-Tron, with the Sportback鈥檚 sloping roofline encroaching on rear passenger and boot-space. The 600-litre boot capacity will probably lose around 70-litres or so, but the handy 60-litres of load space under the bonnet will be retained. We鈥檙e expecting the new e-Tron Sportback to make its debut very soon, though an appearance at the Geneva Motor Show next week would be a surprise. Like the conventional e-Tron, we anticipate that just one trim level for the Sportback will be offered in the UK from its likely launch in 2020, with an S Line and Vorsprung edition to follow later.





This is the Mercedes-AMG A 35 4Matic saloon, the second model to be launched under AMG鈥檚 newly-established 35 range, and a direct rival to the Audi S3 Saloon. Joining the hatchback in the range Mercedes-AMG says it鈥檚 aimed at younger buyers, combining the brand鈥檚 sportiness with more space for passengers and their luggage. The styling is familiar from A 35 hatch with the biggest changes occurring at the rear, where a boot lip spoiler, rear diffuser and two large tailpipes have been added. It rides on 18-inch twin-spoke alloy wheels. It鈥檚 powered by a 302bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine that develops 400Nm of torque. Like its hatchback cousin, the entry-level AMG can hit 155mph and 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds. That makes the A 35 Saloon two seconds quicker from 0-62mph than the Audi S3 Saloon. Power is delivered through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox to Merc鈥檚 4Matic four-wheel drive system. The A 35 Saloon鈥檚 front suspension comprises an aluminium wishbone with one spring strut and one tie rod, while the rear is served by a multi-link rear axle. A three-mode AMG Ride Control suspension system provides manually set and automatic adaptive adjustable dampers, an option on this model. As predicted, a high-performance braking system is carried over from the A 35 hatchback. Front 350mm and rear 330mm brake discs all come internally ventilated and perforated, which dissipate the heat under hard use. The cabin is largely unchanged from the regular A-Class hatch, but some AMG unique features such as the flat-bottom steering wheel and AMG sports seats appear. Merc鈥檚 familiar 12.3-inch dual digital displays on the dash provide access to the firm鈥檚 new MBUX infotainment system with voice control.





The A-Class is the entry-level variant in Mercedes鈥?extensive and ever-expanding model range - and the A 180 is the cheapest way to put a three-pointed star on your driveway. In SE spec, as tested here, it comes with a Renault-sourced 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine and a six-speed manual gearbox. But does that mean those unable to stretch to the more powerful and arguably more desirable A 200 AMG Line, should feel short-changed? Every new A-Class - including the basic SE - comes with twin digital displays, sat-nav, Live Traffic information and keyless go. Quality is excellent; the doors shut with that characteristic Mercedes thud, and the dash is covered in squashy plastics. The only place you鈥檒l find scratchier materials is on the very lower part of the front seats, in fact, but all the regular touchpoints feel solidly screwed together. Delve a little deeper and you鈥檒l find that leather is actually made from ARTICO man-made fabric.





But this is something Mercedes is implementing right across the range as an environmental upgrade, rather than an attempt to cut costs. Either way, it looks and feels like the real thing. Under the bonnet, you鈥檒l find a de-tuned version of the A 200鈥檚 1.3-litre petrol engine. Instead of that car鈥檚 161bhp output, the A 180 produces just 134bhp, while torque (200Nm versus 250Nm) is down, too. But linked to the six-speed manual gearbox, the cheapest A-Class never feels slow; it doesn鈥檛 launch like a hot hatch, but performance will be more than adequate for most buyers. The shift is even pretty sweet - the springy feel of old Merc manuals is gone, replaced by a pleasingly short and notchy throw. It鈥檚 even a fairly accomplished motorway cruiser. You鈥檒l need to work the box for peak performance, as it doesn鈥檛 shift down automatically like the DCT. But it鈥檒l sit quietly at a steady 70mph, with those deep-profile tyres cushioning the A鈥檚 occupants from the UK鈥檚 all-too-frequent potholes. So should you step up to the faster A 200, or indeed Merc鈥檚 high-end trims? An A 180 SE will cost you around 拢357 per month on a 36-month, 10,000-mile a year PCP deal with a 10 per cent deposit. There are tangible benefits to spending another 拢18 per month on the Sport-spec鈥檚 LED lights and two-zone climate control, of course, not to mention the aesthetic gains gifted by the 17-inch wheels. But we鈥檇 argue that another 拢27 per month (拢402/month) for the equivalent A 200 is money better spent on the A-Class鈥檚 excellent Executive Package, which adds heated front seats, Active Parking Assist and a larger 10-inch media display.





The 2019 Porsche 911 is available in a dizzying variety of configurations that range from truly quick to super fast and blindingly speedy. Interestingly, all 911s 鈥?with two spectacular exceptions 鈥?are turbocharged. That's right, even the base 911, the regular old Carrera, has two turbochargers heaving air into its horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine. And, yes, that engine is still hanging off the back of the 911 where physics says it shouldn't be, and yet Porsche's engineers make it work brilliantly anyhow. The only two non-turbocharged exceptions for 2019 are the revised 911 GT3 and GT3 RS. The GT3 has a non-turbocharged 4.0-liter flat-six that produces 500 hp, while the GT3 RS features an uprated version of that engine that produces 520 hp. They're both paired to a variety of track-focused chassis enhancements and weight-reducing body pieces. I have to admit I was a bit underwhelmed when I saw the first uncamouflaged photos of the 2019 Infiniti QX50. But after seeing it in person on the L.A. Auto Show floor, I鈥檓 much more impressed by Infiniti鈥檚 latest crossover. No, its design is not as seductive as the swoopy QX30, but once you get up close to the QX50 you can better appreciate its clean lines, slender lamps, and uniquely shaped hood. Inside, there鈥檚 a genuine premium feeling, thanks to quality materials and a handsome cabin design. Of course, there鈥檚 also Infiniti鈥檚 fancy variable-compression ratio engine that I鈥檓 eager to experience for myself. But just judging by what I could see and touch in L.A., I鈥檓 a big fan of the QX50 so far. Ignoring the welcome updates the ex-MKX received, the new 2019 Lincoln Nautilus earns its spot on my best-of list because it signals the beginning of the end of the automaker鈥檚 alphabet soup nomenclature. While luxury automakers such as Cadillac and Infiniti seek to copycat the meaningless naming scheme of the German automakers, it鈥檚 refreshing to see Lincoln move in its own direction.





Although Nautilus might not be the best name for its updated luxury crossover, it鈥檚 certainly a million times better than the forgettable MKX badge that used to be found on this surprisingly competitive SUV. A good set of wheels can really enhance a car鈥檚 design, and that鈥檚 what the eye-catching multispoke 21-inchers do on the new 2019 Lincoln Nautilus crossover in Black Label trim. Although we look forward to testing out the ride quality on a Nautilus Black Label, for now, I鈥檒l just admire those wheels that remind me of a design Audi used to use on the A8. Complemented by Burgundy Velvet paint, the 2019 Nautilus on the show floor looks expensive and attractive, as long as you don鈥檛 mind a little bling. First off, we love the fact that the MKX upgrade includes a name change to Nautilus. And even though this is a refresh and not a full makeover, the SUV is new from the A pillar forward, and the new grille suits this midsize crossover well. The base engine drops the 3.7-liter V-6 for the 2.0-liter turbocharged EcoBoost engine, and the six-speed automatic has been swapped out for the new eight-speed. Lincoln is still not on everyone鈥檚 radar, but the new look of the lineup should help draw attention. Not every cool coupe makes the topless transition gracefully, and given the BMW i8鈥檚 avant-garde lines, roadsterization could easily have gone badly. But the use of 鈥?2-鈥?3 Thunderbird Roadster-style fairings behind the seats really makes the top-down look work, and decapitation didn鈥檛 cost the i8 its fabulous scarab-wing doors. Auto shows should be fun, and Nissan鈥檚 Star Wars show cars at this year鈥檚 display celebrate that. Supporting the upcoming movie Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the cars don鈥檛 preview a future Nissan and no, you can鈥檛 get anything like it in a dealership today, but they鈥檙e entertaining to walk around. The cast tests these cars on performance, their aesthetic design and any other aspect that has the potential of creating a deeper sense of interest. The 508 is very nearly as practical as the Volkswagen, too, while offering lower running costs. It makes the most sense as an automatic, because the PureTech 180 petrol engine is quiet and punchy.





The Arteon is better to drive, more comfortable, more spacious and faster than the Peugeot - but only slightly. Running costs and price combined are crucial for cars such as these and this greater disadvantage here is where the Arteon starts to trail its French rival. It鈥檚 a marginally better car than the 508, but its loftier price and less kit mean the VW drops slightly behind. It鈥檚 pricier than both cars in this test, but the Audi A5 Sportback is stylish, good to drive and has a superb interior. It shares its engine with the VW, so it delivers similar performance. Strong residuals mean it may be more affordable on a PCP than you鈥檇 think. If style is your thing, you can鈥檛 go far wrong with an Alfa Romeo Giulia. Buy used and for this budget you can afford a Veloce, which mixes comfort, handling and performance, so the Italian saloon is even harder to ignore. We saw one with delivery miles for just 拢28,998.

I鈥檒l just say it up front, the folks from Stuttgart make some fine automobiles. In years past some might say their appeal has been limited, with a stereotyped audience of the more, shall I say 鈥渨ell-aged鈥?among us. In recent years however, Mercedes-Benz has made a conscious effort to bring the design language and engineering to a wider range of prospective buyers with sleeker, more aggressive exteriors and less angular interiors. With this in mind, I have decided to put the folks at Mercedes to the test with a series of drives, the first of which is their recently redesigned C-Class sedan, specifically the C300 w/Sport Package. OK, I will be 鈥渦p front鈥?again鈥?I was impressed with this car..! The first thing you notice upon entry is the greatly upgraded interior design and build quality. The C-Class is now clearly at the top of the pack among its competitors, the Audi A4, BMW 3-Series and Cadillac ATS. The exterior design is showing improvement as well, especially from the B-pillar forward. The rear of the car does fall a tad short with too much droop and not enough muscularity to match the forward sections, but a solid design overall. Driving impressions were on the good side of the ledger as well. Minimal turbo lag and plenty of juice from the fine engine and generally overall good performance from the 7-speed transmission. Handling was solid, with enough grip and lightness to feel somewhat nimble at times, although not having the dynamics of the Cadillac ATS or even the Bimmer. What struck me the most was an excellent balance of capabilities, giving the C300 a range of personalities. The car can be a smooth luxury cruiser or a mischievous, sporty ride, depending on your mood and the weight of your right foot.

When a team of engineers from Volkswagen created a hot Golf Mk1 in their own time, the result was the Golf Sport concept, which made its debut at the 1975 Frankfurt Motor Show. Volkswagen took a lot of convincing that there was a viable market for a hot hatch, but it put the Golf GTI into limited production, and was overwhelmed by the demand. The GTI became something of an icon as it made its mark as a staple part of the Golf line-up, accounting for up to 10 per cent of sales. As the bar was raised ever higher, so the GTI got increasingly powerful. The newcomer was available with three or five doors, and there was a choice of six-speed manual or DSG automatic gearboxes. Power came from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. An updated Golf R arrived in April 2016 with LED lights all round, digital dials, a new infotainment system, a 10bhp boost and a number of exterior design tweaks. Which one should I buy? Most Golf Rs have five doors and a DSG automatic transmission; if you prefer a sportier look and don鈥檛 care too much about rear seat access, a three-door model might better suit your needs. Both manual and auto boxes are great to use, so which one you go for is just a matter of personal preference. All Golf Rs come with sports suspension, 18-inch alloy wheels and xenon headlights.





A Performance Pack was also introduced in November 2017. Available only with the DSG transmission, it brought 19-inch alloys, stronger brakes and a 166mph top speed (168mph for the estate). There was a sporty rear spoiler for the hatchback, too. The Golf GTI and GTD offer many of the R鈥檚 features and benefits, but in packages that are cheaper to buy and run. After the urgency of the Golf R, these might seem rather anaemic, though, which is why Audi鈥檚 362bhp (later to be 395bhp) RS 3 might hold more appeal for those after a performance-focused experience. Yet while the RS 3 is beautifully built and well kitted out, it鈥檚 also costly to buy and run, with second-hand prices starting at 拢30,000. These factors also apply to the 355bhp Mercedes-AMG A 45 which, as with the RS 3 and Golf R, comes with four-wheel drive. Don鈥檛 overlook the 326bhp BMW M135i and its replacement (from May 2016), the 340bhp M140i, both of which are great fun with their rear-wheel-drive set-ups.

Even so, our past experiences in Macan S and Turbo models with grippier all-season rubber also left us feeling like Porsche鈥檚 small SUV had too much understeer to feel truly sporty when pushed. As we arrive at our destination, a cabin near Sonora, California, we choose to take a steeper driveway up to the house. This dirt and gravel road, which was originally made for trucks to tow boats to the lake at the end of it, is easy for 4脳4s to handle but much more difficult for front- and rear-wheel-drive machines to tackle. With the Macan in Off-Road mode, we slowly make our way up the 30-50 percent grade. The worst thing about driving the Macan up this route is that the car鈥檚 optional ParkAssist system rings and howls almost continuously, as it thinks the overgrown grass on either side of the trail is a hazard. While the Macan weighs 1,025 lbs more than a base 911, it also makes it up the hill to the house over the challenging terrain without any drama.





That would likely not be the case if a sports car were driven up the same route. The next morning, we鈥檙e back in action on the twisty roads near the Stanislaus National Forest. From a functional aspect, the Macan is a perfectly competent grand touring machine. And as the miles roll by, we even warm up to its character some. Through sweeping corners, the Macan feels planted and exhibits little to no body lean. Its steering response is sharp and precise, and the GTS鈥檚 brakes deliver consistent performance. 1,310 option rather than being standard. For that amount, you get an analog and digital stopwatch on the top of the dash, Sport Plus mode, a performance display on the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system, and Launch Control. The sum you pay for these extras is reasonable, but we want them to be standard in the facelifted or second-generation Macan. Alternating between freeway and backroads as we trek east towards Lake Tahoe, snow flurries and showers from the sky as the elevation increases.





Here the Macan inspires more confidence. While we do indeed back down our pace on the slicker roads, at no point do we feel a lack of grip or composure. This can, of course, be chalked up to the snow tires and all-wheel-drive system. 3,390 Premium Plus package, which features a Bose stereo, auto-dim mirrors, heated front and rear seats, a panoramic moonroof and Porsche Entry & Drive. The 14-speaker Bose system emits clear and pleasant sound, and the clever mirrors, warm seats, and expansive glass roof are nice to have. The ease of keyless and engine starting with Entry & Drive is appreciated. For the money, this is an options bundle worth selecting. So, does the GTS have the best driving dynamics and comfort of the Macan range? We鈥檇 say the Macan Turbo is comparable if not better. The Macan GTS is ultimately a polarizing machine. On the one hand, it is a competent and comfortable SUV that leads its class in nearly every performance category. 56,250 362-hp Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43 bests the GTS in 0-60 acceleration (4.8 sec. On the other hand, the GTS feels too heavy and underpowered relative to other contemporary performance machines to be truly exciting.





Poland-based Carlex Design wants people to know it has a division called Pickup Design that helps transform ordinary workhorses into custom creations tailored to its customers鈥?wishes. Thus, it searched for a way to promote its activity than to create some outlandish projects. The new Exy Monster X Concept definitely fits the bill, as it imagines a radically modified Mercedes-Benz X-Class with three driven axles and a wild widebody kit. Oddly enough for a pickup truck, the entire bodywork is made of carbon fiber 鈥?including the aggressively-designed bed bars. Speaking of the load box, it鈥檚 covered with a yellow protective paint that provides a stark contrast with the vehicle鈥檚 carbon black exterior. The same yellow hue is used on the brake calipers, tow hooks, and the bar for the roof-mounted lights. The seats are yellow as well, but that鈥檚 the only interior element we can spot through the heavily tinted windows. Knowing Carlex, the cabin should be in the same vein as the exterior. The tuner says the X-Class donor vehicle was significantly lowered and widened courtesy of huge fender extensions also made from carbon fiber. Other striking design details include the tailgate鈥檚 X-shaped design, massive wheels shod with Bridgestone Potenza high-performance tires, and new bumpers that feature a winch at the front and wide trapezoidal tailpipes at the rear. By the way, the front and rear winches aren鈥檛 for off-roading. According to Carlex, the Monster X Concept is configured as a track safety car, which also explains the roof-mounted emergency lights. Come to think of it, the carbon-ceramic brake discs may also come in handy on the track. While only a concept, for now, the Monster X will 鈥渟oon become the king of highways and global tracks,鈥?according to Carlex.

TTAC features one of my favorite bloggers, Steven Lang. A used car dealer in the Atlanta area, I find his insights on the ins and outs of the trade, and particularly auctions, simply fascinating. Edmunds Long-Term Road Test Updates - This mainstay of Internet car coverage is of course primarily focused on providing information for prospective new car buyers. I don't find much value in the traditional short road test popular on many car sites. But I like this feature, where staff members post short articles about their daily adventures with the wide variety of cars in Edmunds' long term fleet.

These year long log book comments give readers a much better idea of what it is like to live with a car, rather than simply test drive it. Often a journey down memory lane, where suddenly a '74 Maverick is kind of interesting simply because you haven't seen one in a couple of decades. Bring a Trailer - If you have not been to BAT, go now. As addictive a site as a car person can stand. CarGurus - This is my current go-to site for car shopping, particularly related to fairly accurate pricing. Those are the sites that make up my almost every evening Internet car surf.
