Air Flow Sensor

Vehicle Type:

Boxster 2.7/Boxster S

Model Year:

As of 2000 (Y)

Concern:

New airflow sensor (HMF) that is less sensitive to dirt particles.

Information:

As of January 31, 2000, a new HMF is being introduced. The new HMF, which is less sensitive to dirt particles, is being installed in production

starting with the following VIN numbers:

Boxster: 98 6YS 62 0415 2.7 liter

Boxster: 98 OYU 62 5100 2.7 liter

Boxster S: 98 OYS 66 0258 3.2 liter

Boxster S: 98 3YU 66 2414 3.2 liter

A barcode sticker will be attached to the air cleaner housing to make it easier to distinguish whether a new or an old HFM is installed in the engine.

When replacing an old sensor, the DME will have to be reprogrammed. This is accomplished by using the PST2 with version 9.0 installed. Version

9.0 has a tentative release date of May 1, 2000. Please note that until software version 9.0 is released; continue to use the old style HMF sensor for

repairs.

The barcode sticker reads as follows:

Number Description

996 110021 09 Old style HFM

996 110 02110 New style HFM

Note:

The numbers printed on the bar sticker are not the actual part numbers of the sensors.

The sensors are visually distinguished two ways:

1. There are coded pegs by the electrical plug connection (see figure 1). One peg (A) indicates the old style and two pegs (N) indicates the new

style.

2. The air sampling port is manufactured differently (see figure 2). A straight bottom (A) indicates the old style and curved bottom (N) indicates

the new style.

Work Procedure:

When replacing an old style HMF sensor on vehicles with a new style HMF sensor, you have to reprogram the DME. Remember; do not install a

new style HMF sensor until you receive the 9.0 software for the PST2.

Programming the DME control unit with PST2 after installing a new style HFM.

1. Connect the PST2 and switch on ignition.

2. Select vehicle type and start search with the >> key.

3. Select DME in the control modules menu and press the >> key.

4. Select control unit programming and press the >> key.

5. Select program map and press the >> key.

6. Input the VIN number, press the >> key and confirm with the F7 key.

7. Input the old programming number and press the >> key. This is the number obtained from IPAS. Confirm the number with the F7 key.

8. Select the proper data record corresponding with New HMF. Example: "Boxster S OBD II (LEV, manual transmission), New HMF". Press

the >> key to start programming.

Note:

LEV stands for Low Emission Vehicle.

9. When programming is complete, a message will be displayed "After control unit programming, the "CAN timeout" fault must be erased on

every control unit connected with the CAN". Press the >> key to continue.
