WASHINGTON 鈥?The U.S. Commerce Department has agreed to Tesla Inc鈥檚 request to waive 10 percent tariffs on imported aluminum from Japan used in the manufacture of battery cells at Tesla鈥檚 Nevada Gigafactory, government documents show. The Palo Alto, California-based company made the request in documents posted in April and said the aluminum is produced by Nippon Light Metal Co Ltd and was seeking a tariff exclusion for 10,000 tonnes annually. The battery cells are assembled into packs which are the energy source for the Tesla Model 3 vehicle as well as energy storage products, Tesla said in its request. 鈥淭esla is the only US manufacturer of these battery types and planned production of these batteries will increase exponentially over the next few years,鈥?the company鈥檚 request said. Tesla鈥檚 exclusion request specified several different width and thickness for aluminum sheets. Tesla said U.S. manufacturers cannot 鈥渕eet the alloy composition or thickness requirements. No objections were filed to Tesla鈥檚 request. Tesla previously sought other tariff exemptions from the U.S. Trade Representative鈥檚 Office for Chinese-made parts, including the Model 3 car computer and the Autopilot 鈥渂rain鈥?that were rejected.
An exclusive Tesla version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 that has been circulating has been proven to be fake. The Tesla and Samsung supposed collaboration smartphone first popped up on Chinese website Weibo. The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 in question had a metallic silver color and sported the Tesla logo on the back. Both companies have yet to confirm the existence of this device. However, it鈥檚 been confirmed that the design is only a concept made by Youtuber Aron Maini. The video he released only shows what could鈥檝e been if Tesla and Samsung were to team up to make a smartphone. So far, Tesla has yet to officially release a smartphone or even announce any collaboration with any of the smartphone making companies like Apple, Samsung or Huawei. Meanwhile, Samsung is currently working on their devices such as the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Fold. Samsung is still working on the Galaxy Fold as its development is riddled with problems. Previously, the company announced that it will postpone the Fold's launch after many reviewers slammed the device鈥檚 screen problems. Once dust gets in the screen after repeated folds, the screen would be rendered unusable. Samsung and even their rival, Huawei, have taken a step back to calibrate the devices further.
