A Hard Day's Knightsbridge!

A Hard Day's Knightsbridge!

The 56-year-old said he has been able to put his children through university and private school thanks to the hits which include 'The Riddle', 'Wouldn't it be Good' and 'I Won't Let the Sun go Down on Me'. He also confirmed he received 'huge' royalties from the 1991 chart topper 'The One and Only', which was performed by Chesney Hawkes. But the musician revealed his worst business investment was buying a mansion in Ireland with five partners. A Hard Day's Knightsbridge! Share They sold the property at the start of this year for a third of the purchase price - and he lost 拢150,000, he revealed. He said in the interview that receiving royalties for his songs, including 'The One and Only', was 'like having a pension'. He said: 'That song has made me millions of pounds over the years, along with The Riddle, Wouldn't it be Good and I Won't Let the Sun go Down on Me. In the early 1980s, his hit 'I Won't Let The Sun Go Down On Me' soared to number two having been re-released and became a major hit in a number of other countries. The same album, 'Human Racing', yielded 'Wouldn't it be Good' and spent three weeks at number four in the charts. When asked whether money made him happy, he replied, 'no', but added it can help take stress away and provide for your family. Talking about his favourite charities, he said he backs the Down's Syndrome Association as his son has the condition while he also supports the cancer charity Macmillian. The singer added a recent surge in interest in the Eighties has helped things along. At the end of the Nineties when royalties were drying up and my new stuff wasn't getting recorded or covered by other artists, it was looking dodgy.

So, what鈥檚 lurking behind these aluminum bars, you might wonder? Instead of the vulnerable 1950s four-cam motor, a prime example of Porsche's own Type 616/36 pushrod engine has found its way into this Spyder. The power plant is of 1966 vintage; its main assets are great compression, superior oil pressure, and the absence of any oil leaks. Topped by twin dual throat Dell鈥橭rto carburetors with velocity stacks and mesh screens, and recently tuned by our Senior master technician Dieter, the 1600 dual port Porsche engine is in fine fettle and healthy as the proverbial ox. Weighing only 1136 lbs. Spyder is built around a tubular space frame, just like its contemporaries, the Mercedes 300SLR and the "Birdcage" Maserati. Dash is all business, with its famous trio of green-on-black gauges--large tachometer in the middle--and wood-rimmed steering wheel. So what's it like, driving a street-legal race car, an automobile icon, a car so extreme that it stops other drivers in their tracks? With an estimated 110 horsepower from 1.6 liters (69 horsepower per liter displacement), this engine is destined to last. But make no mistake: the power-to-weight ratio is about equal to the one found on a pure, 260 hp Porsche 930 Turbo. Acceleration is fierce, and the Boxer motor, sitting right behind your back, won't let you doubt its intentions for a second. Keep the revs up, and it screams all the way to redline, like there's no tomorrow. Occasional flame spitting from the handcrafted, large diameter exhaust pipe is part of the fun you won't want to miss, trust me.

Luxury car maker Porsche has been accused of manipulating emissions data to save some of its owners 拢225-a-year in road tax costing the exchequer some 拢3 million. The sports car manufacturer is alleged to have set up some of its models to reduce its carbon dioxide rating. Some 1,500 owners of models such as the Boxster S, Spyder, Cayman R and Cayman S are alleged to have benefited from the scheme which saw the cars rated in the 201-225g/km band rather than the higher 226-255 g/km band. As a result, owners had to pay 拢315 in road tax compared with 拢540. According to The Times, Porsche managed to achieve the lower UK rating by setting off in second gear while performing the emissions test. Setting off in second gear would increase wear on the clutch but also reduces revs leading to a lower CO2 output. Details of the test emerged during a court case involving John Cieslik, 51, from Saintfield, County Down. Does your area have the worst drivers? According to documents uncovered during the legal action, Porsche executive Stephan Laux explained the difference in CO2 readings between UK and European cars as a result of differing road tax rules. Last month German police arrested a Porsche manager in connection with the ongoing diesel emissions scandal. The arrest was the first time Porsche had been linked to the diesel emission scandal which has affected its parent company Volkswagen. BMW recalled some 12,000 cars in February after admitting they contained software that allowed the engines to release more harmful emissions on the road than in the lab - but insisted the software was installed by mistake. MailOnline has approached Porsche for a comment.
