In 2010, just 157 Maybachs sold worldwide - well short of the 2,711 Rolls-Royces purchased that year. Currently, Mercedes uses the Maybach name on high-spec versions of its range-topping models - like the S 650 Cabriolet. The Mercedes-Maybach will also be able to reach a limited top speed of 155mph - not bad for a luxury barge on wheels. Retract the roof and the 拢60,000-plus premium over the AMG S65 is more apparent. Mercedes claims the cabin is inspired by the inside of a luxury yacht - with the additions it has it probably weighs the same as one too. That's because this car is kitted out with 'waterfall-like' leather trim (whatever that means) and a matching set of travel cases that mirror the near-拢300K motor. There's no confirmation of how many will come to the UK. Like the Rolls-Royce it goes up against, the interior is bespoke to each buyer, with an endless selection of features, finishes and materials available. Quite simply, all 300 cars sold will be worth well over the retail price quoted by Mercedes. Every model will come with the Airscarf neck-heating system already used on the S-Class Cabriolet range - blowing warm air over your shoulders if you have the top down on a cool day - and 'Swarovski crystal headlamps'. But would you buy one over the Rolls-Royce alternative? Check the spec comparison below to help you make your decision.

The chassis is painted and the engine installed. 1 cylinder, not under; I think I'll leave it alone if only because this will play havoc with the exhaust from the turbo and wastegate. So with the chassis painted, the body now has a couple of coats in white, plus the yellow has been put on after taping it all up. I foolishly forgot to spray on a coat of clear over the tape before going to the yellow, so there are a few spots where yellow seeped under the tape and which will need to be fixed, but nothing major. One nice aspect of using Testor's rattle cans is being able to do touch ups with a brush. I took advantage of this benefit in several places and will continue to do so going forward. The decal on the hood proved a challenge. The air scoops all have photo-etched grilles (6 in the hood alone) that look quite nice. This is a step up from having to paint, then wash in some flat black, although the grilles are fragile and it is possible to lay on way too much CA glue. As with polystyrene glue, toothpicks are helpful in limiting the amount of glue on any given part. I will be busy with other things for the next day or two, then away from the bench until November, so updates will be sparse for the next while. Please feel free to comment on anything you see here.

Wings large and small, stylized and realistic鈥?Badges of more than 10 car companies incorporate this symbol of speed. The 鈥淰鈥?shape in the middle of the logo is made in an upturned wing style and looks very much like simplified cartoon sketches of birds in flight. The emblem is supposed to stand for Mazda鈥檚 desire to soar into the future. The logo comprising a winged shape with the word 鈥淐hrysler鈥?in the center was created after Chrysler merged with Fiat. However, even the first version of the company鈥檚 emblem created in 1924 also had flanking wings. This logo was created by Oliver Clark, who was one of the company鈥檚 engineers. In comparison with other automakers鈥?logos, Bentley鈥檚 emblem comprises one of the most realistic versions of spread wings. You can even notice a bird鈥檚 tail. This is one of the rare cases when logo doesn鈥檛 leave much room for misunderstanding. You may, for instance, remember the logo BMW has been having for several decades.
