Audi Q3 Reviews & Prices

The Audi Q3 is the smallest of three SUVs Audi sells here in the U.S., and slots below the 鈥渕id-size鈥?Q5 and 鈥渇ull-size鈥?Q7. It鈥檚 packaged and priced to compete with the equally compact and urbane Mercedes-Benz GLA, BMW X1 and Infiniti QX30. Somewhere along the line micro-SUVs became a thing. And while they seem like high-riding hatchbacks rather than actual SUVs, they have caught the eye of well-heeled young consumers, which means every luxury brand needs one to compete. Enter the Audi Q3. Although this bite-size SUV has been on sale in Europe since 2011, Audi waited until the market for upscale, downsized vehicles was big enough to justify certifying a Q3 for the U.S. And in late 2014 Audi decided to jump in. The Q3 shares much of its architecture with the A3 sedan, which in turn was spawned by the VW Golf. In fact, a version of the Golf GTI engine powers the Q3.

However, the Audi differs by using a conventional 6-speed automatic transmission, rather than the GTI鈥檚 dual-clutch auto-manual. And of course the Q3 is offered in both front- or all-wheel drive. Audi鈥檚 small SUV is also related to the first-generation VW Tiguan, but the Q3 chassis uses more aluminum and high-strength steel, the body is more rakish and less utilitarian, and the interior is much more luxurious. When introduced, the Audi justified its price with an extra-solid body and standard features like leather trim, panoramic sunroof, xenon headlamps and dual-zone climate control. So while the Q3鈥檚 slick styling means it isn鈥檛 as roomy as the Tiguan, it鈥檚 notably more posh, inside and out. The Q3 also has a more relaxed ride than its somewhat stiff VW cousin. In our first review of a Q3, we liked the full-on Audi-quality interior, and the smoothness of the engine, but were less impressed with the Novocain steering. The Audi Q3 has changed little since its introduction as a 2015 model, and the latest Q3 still uses an older-generation GTI engine and earlier-generation Golf underpinnings - albeit with updates and improvements. Regardless, the Q3 has not migrated to VW/Audi鈥檚 excellent and completely new MQB chassis, which makes this an outdated model. Because the Audi styling is just too hard to resist, and the micro-ute packaging fits perfectly into your lifestyle and your parking space. Plus, the Mercedes GLA is just too small inside and the BMW X1 seems too much like a traditional station wagon. The Audi Q3 is really showing its age when it comes to power, efficiency and driving dynamics, and the small Mercedes and Lexus SUVs have more attitude. And if you really want the full German driving experience, the BMW X1 hits the spot.

After the Typ 3, Volkswagen continued to expand its range upward by offering in 1968 what was then its largest car ever - the Typ 4, known from the public as the 411 model. Despite its higher ambitions, the 411 remained unmistakably linked to the original Beetle. From the outside, it basically looked as an overgrown Typ 3, retaining the traditional air-cooled, rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive arrangement. Some discrete but significant innovations were introduced though, most notably unibody construction and an efficient suspension through MacPherson struts. More apparent to the public, the 411 would also be Volkswagen鈥檚 first four-door vehicle. Volkswagen鈥檚 reaction was to offer a more conventional alternative to its 411. It appeared in 1970 as the K70, designed by NSU and hastily rebadged after the little company鈥檚 takeover. In turn, the K70 itself was a relative failure, and both cars cohabited while Volkswagen鈥檚 engineers were working on a common successor. For the die-cast of a Sixties German car, there is perhaps no better choice than Minichamps. The famed manufacturer offers, among others, this fine reproduction of the two-door estate version of the 411 (there were no four-door estate).

The Slot Car Handbook for Christmas which has lots of useful information about getting the best out of slot cars. One recommendation was not to put new cars straight on the track but instead to run the motors in at various increasing voltages. This is to prevent arcing at high voltages which vaporises bits of brush or commutator inside the motor. I bought a variable voltage transformer and wired it up to a modified Scalextric Powerbase to act as a testbed. A piece of MDF prevents the cars shooting off the front and pieces of foamcard underneath lift the driving wheels away from the track. The other purpose of the testbed is to true the tyres. Instead of the foamcard lifting the rear wheels clear, a piece of sandpaper is placed underneath and so any bulge in the tyres can be rubbed away. On the testbed above are two Christmas presents from Andy - both in Martini colours. In silver is the Porsche 917/10 Turbo Interserie 1974 and in black, a Marcos LM600.
