Earlier this month, Porsche announced the 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport. As the racing version of the Cayman, it comes in two versions: one for track-day enthusiasts and one for more serious racers. We expect Porsche to reveal a street-legal Cayman GT4 seen, as well as a Boxster Spyder that uses the same powertrain. But will they use the Clubsport鈥檚 3.8-liter flat-six? Our spy photographer caught this Boxster Spyder prototype during winter testing in Europe. It鈥檚 essentially undisguised, showing off its folding roof and double-bubble tonneau. Opinions will probably be split over whether it鈥檚 better-looking than its predecessor, the 2016 Boxster Spyder, but even if you鈥檙e not a fan of the styling, it may still win you over with its powertrain. That鈥檚 because our we鈥檝e once again heard that the 718 Boxster Spyder (and Cayman GT4) won鈥檛 get the old 3.8-liter six, as Porsche plans instead to give both cars the 4.0-liter flat-six found in the 911 GT3. If that bears out, the question remains how much power will the Boxster Spyder will make. In the GT3, that engine makes 500 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque, output figures that would be absolutely staggering in the smaller, lighter Spyder. But Porsche may plan to detune the engine to something like 425 horses in this application鈥攚hich would still be pretty, pretty rad. After all, the last Boxster S our colleagues at Motor Trend tested hit 60 mph in 4.3 seconds, and that car had 鈥渏ust鈥?350 horses. So when will we find out for sure? It could be as soon as March and the annual Geneva motor show, but whenever it happens, we鈥檙e looking forward to it.
The Tesla Model 3 is yet to begin its full push into the UK, but the all-electric sedan is already making waves in the country. In May, for example, the Model 3 became the region鈥檚 most popular electric car, overtaking the likes of the Jaguar I-PACE and the Audi e-tron, both of which are already in the UK market. What is particularly impressive is that the Tesla Model 3 was able to overtake its rivals in terms of popularity in just one week. 鈥淭he Model 3鈥檚 popularity is down to several factors, with cost being one of them. Monthly prices for the Model 3 start at around 拢400 per month, which is almost half the cost of Tesla鈥檚 larger models. It also undercuts comparable EVs such as the Audi e-tron and Jaguar I-Pace,鈥?he said. Harrison further explained that the Model 3鈥檚 rather late entry to the UK likely contributes to the interest surrounding the vehicle.
The UK, after all, is a right-hand-drive market, and Tesla has only started shipping its first RHD cars to the region. Coupled with reasonable rates, the Model 3 could be an attractive vehicle for the country鈥檚 car buying public. 鈥淥bviously the UK is one of the last countries to get the Model 3, and the long waiting period for right-hand drive models no doubt contributed to this huge early surge in interest too. It鈥檚 early days yet, but if the Model 3鈥檚 popularity continues at a comparable pace over the next few months, then Tesla could have delivered its first mass-market electric car. This is a strong sign that lots of consumers are ready to make the jump to next-generation vehicles and leasing is offering them the ideal opportunity to test the waters,鈥?Harrison explained. Recent reports from members of the Tesla community have indicated that the electric car maker has recently shipped a large batch of RHD Model 3 to the European region. A ship that sailed earlier this month, called the Grand Mark, for example, is speculated to be loaded with around 3,000 right-hand-drive Model 3 for the United Kingdom.
Thanks for all the suggestions. Unfortunately, 991.2 GT3 RS is PDK only. GT3 Touring is the one with no wing. And yes, the 911 R is NA and 6-sp manual, however it is practically not available. GT4 was 2016 only, although we are an unknown number of months away from new release of the 718-based version. The Clubsport (race) version of it was released in January or February, with a NA 3.8 and PDK only. Andreas Preuninger, head of the GT car program, swears the new one will not have the exact same engine as the Clubsport (in 2016, the street and CS cars had the exact same 3.8 engine). Some official sources have hinted at the street car having manual only again (as in 2016) and some have hinted at the availability of PDK alongside manual, only later in the model run (which is typically about 12-to14 months long). The street car was hinted at being unveiled at Geneva, but that came and went, as has NY, without a GT4. Next speculation is Goodwood in July. Apparently, there has been a setback with something. Many photos and video of unmasked cars being tested.
