Porsche 718 Cayman Reviews & Prices
The Porsche 718 Cayman is the slightly more hardcore, hardtop version of the Boxster. And though Cayman and Boxster share mechanical hardware, they are aimed at different buyers, with the Cayman driver looking for a tighter, more distilled Porsche experience. Despite its technical excellence, the Boxster developed a bit of an image problem. The small engine and soft styling gave the impression that this car was somehow less athletic than a 鈥渞eal鈥?Porsche. On the other side of the spectrum, serious drivers wondered how this fantastic chassis would feel with an even stiffer coupe body structure. Regardless of the drivetrain, the Cayman had incredible reflexes, and even the base 2.7-liter model was serious fun, despite having just 245 hp. Or, as we said in our first drive of the base model in 2006 鈥溾€t offers the same mid-engine magic.鈥?And the more powerful first-generation Cayman S? Which brings us to the Porsche 718 Cayman - a 2nd-generation model with new engines shared with the 982-code Boxster. The number 718 calls up historical 4-cylinder mid-engine racing Porsches, and nods to the turbocharged 4-cylinder engines that replace the flat sixes.
Displacement drops to 2.0-liters for the base model, and 2.5-liters for the S, but power jumps to 300 and 350 hp. And the torque positively leapfrogs the 6-cylinder models - now 280 and 309 lb-ft for base and S models. Plus, the torque comes on much lower in the rpm range. So the ripping sixes are replaced by thumping fours, and both Caymans are much faster, with the only casualty being the sweet sound of the old engines. As we said after feasting on the new power and torque during our first drive of the Porsche 718 Caymans, 鈥淎dd it all up, and Porsche buyers should be pleased with the smaller engines. Because now, with the high-torque turbo engines, even a base Porsche 718 Cayman is seriously quick. And that nearly flawless chassis, with its telepathic ride, steering and brakes, is as good as ever. Plus, you get a Porsche with two trunks and a sub-911 price. Because even with its sub-911 price, a Porsche 718 Cayman can get expensive in a hurry. Just look at the options list. And although the new turbo 4-cylinder engines are strong, they just don鈥檛 sound quite right for a Porsche. Maybe a 911 is worth the extra coin.
Porsche has revealed new range-topping versions of its 718 sports car lineup - the 718 Cayman GT4 and 718 Spyder. Sharing a 4.0-litre flat-six engine and a six-speed manual transmission (no automatic 鈥榖ox is available) the Cayman GT4 hard-top and the Spyder convertible are closely related but set up with different driving in mind, focusing on track and road respectively. Both cars use the same chassis, with different aerodynamic setups, and both have a mechanical limited slip differential at the back. The Cayman GT4鈥檚 aerodynamic package produces 50 percent more downforce, much of which is generated by a rear diffuser and the fixed rear wing. The Spyder has a mechanical spoiler that raises at 120km/h. Porsche says that it is the 鈥渇irst model in the Boxster lineup to generate aerodynamic downforce over the rear axle鈥? That six-cylinder naturally aspirated engine produces 308kW and delivers peak torque of 420Nm at between 5,000 and 6,800rpm; the red line sits at 8,000rpm, making this one of the highest-revving engines on the market. Despite these relatively modest figures, Porsche's two new 718 models, the Cayman GT4 in particular, promise to become new benchmarks in the sports car segment. Cheaper models in the 718 lineup offer a four-cylinder turbocharged boxer engine, which has proven controversial with critics.
