Porsche Tops 718 Model Series With 2019 Spyder And 2019 Cayman GT4 (VIDEO)
STUTTGART, June 18 鈥?Porsche has unveiled two models that will be topping the mid-engine lineup thanks to their fresh new six-cylinder boxer engines: the 2020 Spyder and the 2020 Cayman GT4. Today, Porsche announced that the 718 mid-engine series is gaining two new members for the 2020 model year; in these models turbocharged flat-four boxer engines have been swapped out for flat-six versions with six-speed manual transmission. Porsche introduces two particularly emotional and powerful top models to claim top spot in the model series. Both the 2020 718 Spyder and Cayman GT4 claim the top performance spots in the segment and share the same technical basis 鈥?the only significant difference between the models is the presence of a permanent roof or not. The new and improved engines can generate 414 horsepower which brings the Spyder to a top speed of 187 mph and the Cayman GT4 up to 188 mph; both can sprint from 0-60mph in 4.2 seconds. Compared with their predecessors, the Cayman GT4 has significantly improved aerodynamics as a result of a redesigned muffler, a new diffuser, and a reimagined front end, and the 718 Spyder benefits from a GT chassis for the first time. Though each model has been designed for street use, both have been optimised for the track.
Both cars use a dual-clutch 6-speed transmission with mechanical rear differential lock. The front suspension is straight from the 911 GT3 Cup car. Brakes are steel discs all around at 380mm in diameter. The cars weigh in at 1,320 kilograms and come with a welded in roll cage, racing bucket seat, and six-point harnesses. The base 鈥淭rackday鈥?version aimed at amateur events has a fixed shock absorber setup with ABS, ESC, and traction control tuned for driver assistance, but the systems are defeatable. It also has an AC system, rescue hatch in the roof, fire extinguisher, and 80-liter FT3 fuel cell. The car isn鈥檛 street legal, but can be serviced at any Porsche Centre and sells for 134,000 Euro. The competition model has three stage adjustable shock absorbers, 115L fuel tank, infinitely adjustable brake bias system, integrated air-jack, and a quick release steering wheel. The car also features an automatic fire extinguisher system. The competition model is priced at 157,000 Euro. Both versions are available to order now with deliveries globally in February.
Agate Grey Metallic finish with a Black Leather interior. This mid-engine Porsche sits right below the 911 in the company鈥檚 sports car lineup, and 鈥淔un鈥?is a great way to describe what this vehicle is all about. Starting with the 6-Speed Manual Transmission and the engine placement, this 718 Cayman takes the sport-drive into a whole other level, the response and feedback is something that only Porsche has perfected throughout the years. Like the track-spec Clubsport version, it鈥檒l allegedly use an in a natural way aspirated 3.8-liter flat-six creating 420 horsepower (313 kilowatts). Car claims the Cayman GT4 would, in the beginning, be available only with a six-speed manual. Spy shots (previously mentioned) previously give an excellent idea of what the 718 Cayman GT4 looks like. Compared to the previously hostile GTS, the GT4 has even larger intakes in its front fascia, presumably for routing a lot more cool air to the radiators and brakes. A fixed-wing adorns the rear outdoor patio. The dual exhausts are wider apart than on the GTS, and there鈥檚 a prominent diffuser back there, also. The Clubsport racer makes use of organic-dietary fiber composite for the doors and wings, but it鈥檚 not even crystal clear whether or not this light material is on the road car, as well. If you鈥檇 favor this performance but with the added ability to feel the blowing wind in your own hair, Porsche also has the 718 Boxster Spyder under development. It will share all of the mechanized components with the 718 Cayman GT4 but has a bikini-style top with bands that connect to the improved rear deck. There are no specifics but about when the range-topping convertible may arrive, but in some cases, Porsche unveils variations of the Boxster and Cayman together - like with the GTS versions. We can鈥檛 rule out the Spyder dropping its top at the Goodwood Festivity of Speed, too.
