2019 Affolter Diablo Evolution GT1

Ronald Affolteris the owner of a respected Lamborghini dealership, but he also likes to customize cars. One of them unveiled in 1998 was the Diablo Evolution GT1. He completely redesigned the car, including a new front and rear bumper, and changing just about everything that could be changed. Exterior modifications are extensive, with every body panel being modified or replaced. Pop-up headlights were removed and fixed ones took their place. A custom wing has been added and side intakes were enlarged, and twin-ducts feed air to the engine. The Affolter Diablo Evolution GT1 is powered by a twin-turbo V12 engine that delivers 630 hp. The GT1 is a RWD driven car, with Mid-Engine engine location. The V12 engine is mated with a a 5-Speed Manual transmission. The supercar is capable of making the 0 to 60 mph sprint in just 3.5 seconds and can hit a top speed of 217 mph.

But to this driver, it creates a sort of feng shui where the only focus becomes the wheel, the shift lever, and the three pedals in the foot well. A word on those three pedals. It is a delight that in 2018 you can still buy a high-performance sports car with a manual transmission. So many of Porsche鈥檚 competitors limit their customers to technically superior (but decidedly less fun) dual-clutch automatics. The 911 GTS entertainment system comes with SiriusXM and Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay and everything else you鈥檇 expect from a modern vehicle. But reader, mea culpa: I never turned it on for a second. To do so would mask the glorious exhaust note radiating from the car鈥檚 rear. Porsche鈥檚 sport exhaust has a built-in silencer that engages while the car is in Normal driving mode. But switch to Sport mode and the full-throated 911 appears鈥攅very grunt, gurgle, pop, and crackle is unleashed. It is a riot, if not a tad obnoxious while driving through residential areas. Use at your own discretion. Horsepower is a respectable 450, and Porsche claims the car will go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds, 3.5 seconds flat with the PDK transmission (one suspects they are being a tad conservative with these numbers). But let鈥檚 be honest: This is a car for which technical specifications matter little when you鈥檙e out on the road and fully engaged. Equipped with optional rear-axle steering, my GTS took the challenging corners of New York鈥檚 Bear Mountain with aplomb.

Nikola Tesla was a multi-disciplinary genius. His discovery of the rotating magnetic field in 1882 led to a series of US Patents in 1888, which gave us the AC electric power system still in use today. This one achievement earned him the honor of being called 鈥淭he Man Who Invented the 20th Century鈥? But his research went way beyond what has found its way into everyday use. In his masterful article The Problem of Increasing Human Energy, first published in Century Illustrated Magazine in June 1900, Tesla discusses the 鈥渆nergy situation鈥?like never before. After discussing every known method of gathering energy from the Natural World, Tesla departs into the unknown. His first discussion is about a machine that can gather heat from the ambient air. He calls it a 鈥淪elf-acting Engine鈥?since it could run indefinitely from the solar energy stored in the air. He called it 鈥渢he ideal way of obtaining motive power鈥?

Tesla worked for years trying to solve all of the technical issues presented by the idea. His work with liquified air, his discovery of super-conductivity at ultra-low temperatures, his bladeless turbine and mechanical oscillator were all spin-offs from his work on the ambient air engine. He was convinced the system could work and that it was absolutely the best way to harness solar energy. On a world that is warming up, tapping ambient sources of heat in the air, water and ground are the most important technologies to develop at this time. For an in-depth expose on Tesla鈥檚 amazing 鈥淪elf-acting Engine鈥? click here. But Nikola Tesla鈥檚 most famous attempt to provide everyone in the world with free energy was his World Power System, a method of broadcasting electrical energy without wires, through the ground. His Wardenclyffe Tower, pictured above, was never finished, but his dream of providing energy to all points on the globe is still alive today.

There are many reasons why people buy luxury cars - some are truly in love with cars, while some people are crazy about brands and some others just want to be seen.
