What Happens When Tesla鈥檚 AutoPilot Goes Wrong: Owners Post Swerving Videos

The new feature, released in beta, uses radar and camera sensors to detect the distance to cars in front to judge speed and brake, while monitoring the white lane lines to guide it round corners. Several other cars from Volvo, Mercedes, Audi and others do similar, but have yet to be able to change lanes like Tesla. On release, Tesla鈥檚 chief executive, Elon Musk, said: 鈥淲e鈥檙e being especially cautious at this early stage, so we鈥檙e advising drivers to keep their hands on the wheel just in case. The car will chime to remind drivers to put their hands back on the wheel, but that hasn鈥檛 stopped people experimenting - with hair-raising effects. The AutoPilot update will be released in Europe and Asia pending regulatory approval, according to Musk. Beyond the AutoPilot system proving very much a feature in testing, the Tesla Model S has also had reliability issues highlighted in a report by US consumer testing outfit Consumer Reports, which ranked it below average. Many Tesla drivers are early adopters and more accepting of teething problems and the novelty of having a car change with software updates. Such updates have added real value added features including the new AutoPilot mode or Telsa鈥檚 鈥渋nsane鈥?performance mode, as well as fixing bugs and adding small things such as an ever-present smartphone-style battery meter on the central 17-in touchscreen display.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families. Right now, while FHP is still working on its report, it wouldn鈥檛 be right for us to comment on the particulars,鈥?Tein said. According to FHP Cpl. David Riso鈥檚 probable cause affidavit for a search warrant for the Tesla, Monroe County Deputy Joel Torres was the first law enforcement officer at the scene. His body camera footage recorded McGee 鈥渟pontaneously鈥?telling Torres 鈥渢hat he was driving, he had dropped his phone, looked down, ran the stop sign and hit the victim鈥檚 car,鈥?Riso wrote in his report. McGee got out of his car and immediately tended to Dillion, but he did not know Naibel was in the woods, according to Riso鈥檚 report. Her body wasn鈥檛 found until more than 10 minutes after medics arrived. Torres鈥?body camera footage captured the tense moment when witnesses and first responders noticed her in the tree line.

About a minute before she was found, Torres suspected there was another person involved in the wreck when a witness at the scene began yelling there were lady鈥檚 flip flops underneath the truck. Almost two minutes later, the woman can be heard saying, 鈥淪he鈥檚 right there. She鈥檚 right there in the bushes.鈥?When Torres gets to the scene, a firefighter crouching beside her body says she鈥檚 not breathing. McGee told Torres the car was on 鈥渃ruise control鈥?when he dropped the phone. He was on his way to Ocean Reef to pick someone up and was speaking with an airline because he was planning to fly out of town for a funeral the next day. 鈥淎nd, when I popped up, I saw a black truck,鈥?McGee said. Police say there was no indication McGee was drinking. He said he was not, and was coming straight from work in Boca Raton to Ocean Reef.

Riso stated in his report that McGee never hit the brakes before hitting the Tahoe. The warrant also seeks 鈥渁ny information that will determine if the vehicle was in auto drive mode or cruise control,鈥?Riso wrote. Less than a month after the crash that killed Naibel, another woman was killed on Card Sound Road when she drifted into oncoming traffic and directly into the path of a Miami-Dade transit bus. Shakeenah Telishah Bullard, 38, was pronounced dead at the scene of the May 14 crash. The recent deaths have placed pressure on Miami-Dade and Monroe County officials to do more to make Card Sound Road, which goes through both counties, safer. Many people who work in the Keys take the road, especially those who work at the exclusive Ocean Reef gated community. The other entryway into the Keys 鈥?and the more frequently traveled and direct 鈥?is the 18 Mile Stretch from Florida City to Key Largo.
