One aspect of the Panamera S Hybrid that does require a little more finessing to perfect than with the conventional version is brake function. As with all regenerative brake setups, the Panamera鈥檚 can be slightly more difficult to operate smoothly and modulate intuitively. The 2012 Porsche Panamera S Hybrid is every bit a Porsche despite the absence of a howling Porsche exhaust note. This Stuttgart-derived ride is more grown-up than its pure-octane siblings yet highly capable by every measure, and surprisingly effectual when the yardstick is measuring fuel economy, and by extension, CO2 emissions.

Mid-range torque accounts for more than power when towing, and both of these diesels have plenty. Our experience with the pre-facelift Touareg suggests that the new one will prove to be a stable tow car, as well as a quick one. It鈥檚 still a very heavy 4x4, with a kerbweight of 2185kg (including 75kg for the driver), which gives an 85% match figure of 1857kg. Moreover, a trailer stability programme is standard. The car we drove was fitted with air suspension with continuous damping control, a 拢2170 option on the SE and Escape models, and 拢1590 on the top-spec R-Line. This includes automatic levelling, so it should prove to be a worthwhile option for caravanners, though it is pricey. The system also allows drivers to switch the dampers between 鈥榮port鈥? 鈥榥ormal鈥?and 鈥榗omfort鈥?modes. On the smooth German roads of our test route, the 鈥榗omfort鈥?setting felt plush but may prove to be too soft for its own good with a caravan in tow. 鈥楴ormal鈥?felt like a better compromise.
The second factor that contributed to Ford's decline is problems with new technologies, such as the MyfFord Touch infotainment system and the new PowerShift semi-automatic gearbox used in the Focus and Fiesta. The similar MyLincoln Touch system's problems even affected Lincoln's MKX, even though the brand was ranked above Ford. On the positive side, the Fusion Hybrid scored very well, and its other versions were above average. Contrary to Ford, Chrysler has seen its reliability record improve significantly: Jeep is now the most reliable domestic brand in the U.S., having risen from 20th to 13th place. Dodge and Chrysler did not do badly either, moving up 12 and 3 places respectively. GM's Buick and Cadillac did worse than in 2010, with the LaCrosse, Enclave AWD and SRX scoring lower than last year and losing the "recommended" tag.
