The Whole Stance Of The Vehicle
Three years after its Porsche 918 Spyder Prototype Minichamps have released the production version of the hybrid sports car. The difference between the prototype and the production version is predominantly in the 鈥渢op pipes鈥?exhaust system, although its spectacular blue flames is not what Porsche mean when they advertise their 918 as 鈥渞ocket science鈥? The engine cover has been replaced by mesh for better engine ventilation. This, however, is no photo-etched mesh-grille on the Minichamps model, but simply a structure printed on transparent plastic. This inexpensively created illusion just works fine when the plastic is not at an angle to reflect a light source. The rear wing鈥檚 slight change has been recreated by Minichamps, too, yet it still does not extend. The rear engine cover does not open either, but in contrast to the prototype, you can now not only open the model鈥檚 doors , but its front hood, although this does not reveal much. You might want to criticize that the front麓s air inlets are closed, but you may remark in Minichamps鈥?defense that they are closed on the real car and only open up in - literally - the heat of the action.
There is, however, no excuse for not having perforated air outlets underneath the rear lights. The production car has to be road-legal of course, so the red tow-loops have disappeared and the lighting has changed. The head lights have been recreated in nice detail and indicators and quarter lights have been added to the front. The additions to the rears, however, is only printed on or transparent plastic. The interior is a real treat with neon green piping encircling the cabin on the door trim, along the dash board underneath the wind screen and on the seats. Especially the steering wheel and the gauges leave a good impression, whereas the centre console seems a bit flat with its printed on controls, although we know that the real car mostly has equally flat touch controls there. The total absence of seat belts (let alone fabric belts) is all the more lamentable as the locks have been recreated on the seats. The prototype model at least had plastic harnesses. The fine replication of carbon fibre in the cabin is noteworthy. The whole stance of the vehicle, the rims and the neon brake calipers have been captured nicely and the paint job on the model is excellent.
The current 718 Boxster is already one good-looking machine, mostly because it shares so many design features with the 911. The Spyder takes things up a notch thanks to its unique features. The main highlight is obviously the revised deck lid, which now includes two flying buttresses that remind of the iconic 911 Speedster. The Spyder also features a unique, manually operated fabric top that seals you inside when you need to take cover from cold or bad weather. This top has a lightweight design. But the Spyder isn鈥檛 just about a revised deck lid. It鈥檚 actually a drop-top version of the 718 Cayman GT4, so it shares many of the coupe鈥檚 race-inspired features. There鈥檚 a revised front outlet for improved cooling and downforce, an extending rear spoiler for extra downforce, and a new rear diffuser that reduces lift. Overall, this thing is ready to hit the race track. The 718 Spyder is heavily based on the regular Boxster, but it has a few extra features and even some unique touches.
Porsche went mainly with race-oriented equipment, such as a GT Sport steering wheel wrapped in Alcantara and Sports Seats Plus with raised side bolsters and seating surfaces in the same material. The shift lever and the lower part of the dashboard are also draped in Alcantara for a race-inspired look, while the trim is finished in body color. You can opt for other trim materials. The shift lever is shorter than the standard Boxster for a more direct feel when changing gears. The air conditioning and the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system with Sound Package Plus are fitted as standard. You can optionally upgrade your car to features such as navigation, Porsche Connect, and Apple CarPlay. You can also order the 718 Spyder with the Spyder Classic Interior Package. This bundle includes two-tone leather in Bordeaux Red and black, extended Alcantara upholstery, and GT Silver Metallic trim. Porsche also throws in a new two-tone fabric top in black and red, a combination reminiscent of historic Porsche racing cars.
