The new mid-mounted engine grows in displacement from 3.8 to 4.0-litres with a screaming redline near 9000rpm curdling from behind the front seats. The latest GT4 iteration wont get the 911 versions full 368kW but a milder output near 300kW, eclipsing the previous 283kW engine and mixing it with a screaming rev ceiling. Also heard in the latest GT4 Clubsport spy video is a quick-shifting PDK transmission, though the road version is likely to also get a traditional six-speed manual. The road-going Cayman GT4 is tipped to be unveiled later this year around the time of the Los Angeles motor show at the end of November. 420hp and keep the 9000rpm redline? What would be the point? The 9000rpm redline is so that the engine can make absurd hp/l, without the hp why the redline? Sounds like the next GT3 is going to be turbo, which if true means this is the last shot at a non turbo Cayman/Boxster. Almost makes me want to remortgage my house and see if I can get an allocation!
In 2000 Porsche addressed the issue somewhat by increasing the size of the standard engine to 2.7 litres which had the effect of increasing power to 217 bhp. Top speed for the new model increased to 157 mph with a corresponding 0-60 time of 6.4 seconds. Also in 2000, Porsche introduced the Porsche Boxster S, which had a 3.2 litre flat 6 engine. This version produced 249 bhp which dropped the 0-60 time to a much more acceptable 5.9 seconds. In a small car like the Boxster, this was a significant improvement. At the same time, after working closely with Toyota, Porsche decided to implement a cost saving program through component sharing. In 2003, the Porsche Boxster underwent a facelift and improved in a few minor areas. For example, the plastic window in the rear of the folding roof was replaced with a glass one. The Boxster also received a glove box for the first time and an updated steering wheel. Other aesthetic changes were also made such as replacing the orange indicator lenses at the front and rear of the car with grey ones. In 2004, Porsche released the most powerful version of the Boxster to date with the release of a limited edition version 550 Spyder. Limited to a production run of just 1953 cars, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original 1953 Porsche 550 Spyder. This car had a 266 hp version of the 3.2 litre unit which was good enough to get the Boxster from zero to 60 in 5.7 seconds with a top speed of 165 mph.
There were countless upgrades - inside, out, and under the hood - that made the last Porsche Cayman GT4 stand out from 鈥渓esser鈥?versions. And so it will be with the new one. But as you can see from these latest spy shots, none will be more obvious than the giant wing protruding from its posterior. The top of Porsche鈥檚 718 lineup, the new Cayman GT4 (alongside the Boxster Spyder) is expected to pack the 4.0-liter boxer six from the 911 GT3, albeit likely de-tuned for the smaller package, producing just over 400 horsepower. Porsche executives have hinted that the new model will be available with both manual and dual-clutch automatic transmission options. What else should we expect? Compared to existing versions - including the Cayman GTS - it鈥檒l also have bigger wheels, a stiffer suspension, and a more aggressive aero package that will add a bigger rear spoiler. That wing looks different than the unit we鈥檝e seen attached to prototypes up to this point. It appears to bear a similar curve and even the same vertical brackets holding it in place, but this one has bigger end-plates. Much bigger, the better to channel airflow and keep it stable at speed. Big as it is, that in and of itself won鈥檛 make the GT4 the unadulterated performance machine that it most definitely will be.
