On the first working day of 2018, a press release landed at Autocar HQ to gladden the heart of anyone who has watched the challenging and often financially perilous history of Aston Martin. In the release, the Gaydon firm announced that 2017 had been its busiest and strongest calendar year for unit sales in almost a decade. Aston had sold more than 5000 cars for the first time since 2008 and was on course to declare a phenomenon that so few of the company鈥檚 proprietors have consistently known: profitability. Aston鈥檚 punishing tide of aggregated losses year after year had finally turned. Now consider that happened while the most successful and biggest-selling individual model in Aston鈥檚 history, the V8 Vantage, was in effect in run-out. Has the time finally come to lay to rest that infamous quip of 1980s chairman Victor Gauntlett, that 鈥渢he only way to make a small fortune out of Aston Martin is to start with a large one鈥? The subject of this week鈥檚 road test, the all-new Vantage, should offer an answer. How much more quickly can Aston鈥檚 fortunes be transformed than is currently happening, you might wonder. Is this the car to deliver lasting stability for its maker as well as short-term success? And if it really is to be the bedrock on which that grand and transformative 鈥楽econd Century Plan鈥?is built, is it good enough to withstand the pressure?

ST. HELENA, Calif. 鈥?If you鈥檙e old enough to remember when punk rock first exploded on the music scene in the 1970s, you no doubt remember how radical it sounded. Yet it wasn鈥檛. It鈥檚 simplicity, rawness and rudeness was little more than an acknowledgment of rock鈥檚 roots, which had become buried under the aural sludge of corporate rock. It鈥檚 an analogy that applies to Porsche. The rear-engine 911, now available in a new 鈥渟tripped鈥?911T trim, has grown fat and happy after seven decades on the market. Yes, it鈥檚 iconic, like Paul McCartney or Brian Wilson, but you know what to expect. In contrast, the mid-engine 718 Boxster convertible and Cayman coupe are Porsche鈥檚 punk rockers. They are the distilled essence of Porsche, its quintessence rendered in metal and muscle, particularly in its new GTS trim. Visually, the GTS sports a Sport Design black front fascia with tinted front and rear lights, a black lower rear fascia, centrally mounted black exhaust tips and matte black 20-inch wheels. But it鈥檚 the performance upgrades that matter more: torque vectoring, a mechanical rear-differential lock, the Sport Chrono Package and Porsche Active Suspension Management.

The later reduces ride height by 0.39 inches compared to the standard suspension. Yes, you can get these on S models, but it will cost you more. And the GTS鈥?2.5 liter flat-four cylinder engine鈥檚 has an additional 15 horsepower compared to the 718 S models and up to 35 horsepower more than the previous naturally aspirated Boxster and Cayman GTS. That makes the GTS good for 365 horsepower through its six-speed manual transmission, although a seven-颅speed Porsche Doppel颅kupplung (PDK) dual-clutch transmission is optional. 3,730 for the PDK, understand that it does have its advantages. Specifically, it has 317 pound-feet of torque versus the manual鈥檚 309, and an extra mile per gallon in fuel economy ratings. Most important, the PDK is faster, with a 0-60 mph time of 3.9 seconds. Order the manual and that same run takes 4.4 seconds. Track hounds take note. What you quickly discover, just as in other Boxster Cayman models, is that the 718 GTS models make the perfect dance partner 鈥?but even more so. With two seats, two trunks (one front, one rear), Alcantara trim, and an engine placed over your shoulder, the 718 Boxster/Cayman GTS is not just ideally balanced, it鈥檚 one sweet sports car. Everything on this car is ideal for tearing up your favorite twisties. The tires grip with authority, the steering is quick and precise, body lean is nonexistent. A knob on the steering wheel adjusts the vehicle鈥檚 driving mode from Normal to Sport, Sport Plus, and Individual. As you鈥檇 expect, the ride is very firm, and even the Normal mode delivers a firm ride over rough road surfaces.

Earlier this week, we delivered a fresh batch of spyshots portraying the 2019 Porsche Macan, with the facelifted incarnation of the crossover having been spotted testing in its home country. While the already-spicy high-riding Porscha is about to get even hotter, you shouldn't expect the machine to receive a GT badge. Andreas Preuninger, the man steering Porsche's GT arm recently reinforced the idea that the racetrack-tech-for-the-road division won't release an SUV anytime soon. Talking to Car and Driver, the executive made it clear that Porsche GT cars must have a direct connection to the automaker's racecars. Preuninger was nice enough to paint the picture of a world where a GT Division-touched SUV would make sense. 鈥淚f we were to enter the Dakar rally with a Macan or Cayenne鈥攕omething we have no plans to do鈥攖hen maybe the Motorsport department would develop that car and bring it to the race. Then I would see a good excuse to make something for the street that is very close,鈥?Preuninger said. 鈥淏ut to just use a badge on a Panamera or Cayenne to make it more attractive, for me, would not be credible. Nevertheless, the Macan will get hotter with the revamp. 2018 Jaguar F-Pace SVR and potential Range Rover Velar SVR should do the same. For the time being, the most powerful Macan is the Performance Package-gifted Turbo, which packs 440 hp. The refresh is expected to replace the 3.6-liter V6 of the Macan Turbo with the new 2.9-liter V6 animating the second-gen Panamera S, which delivers the same maximum output, but could receive further upgrades. As for the denied GT-badged Porsche Cayenne GT, velocity aficionados shouldn't fret. The already-confirmed 2018 Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid, which should mirror the Panamera range-topper's 680 hp will offer all the high-riding sprinting one could ever wish for.
