If you can鈥檛 afford to slip behind the wheel of a car worth five times the average house price in London, the next best thing just might be being the sales executive who drove the deal. Just ask Tim Bamford of St. Thomas, for whom the sale is a culmination of more than a year鈥檚 work by he and his colleagues at Porsche of London. Bamford placed the order for the limited edition 918 Spyder last February and closely followed the completion of the luxury sports car, only 918 of which have been built. 鈥淭his is a little bit my baby, this deal, this car,鈥?said Bamford. Who the buyer is, the dealership won鈥檛 say. But the 887-horsepower car, with a 鈥渓iquid metal silver鈥?paint job and personal touches 鈥?the 918 Spyder can have about 250 customized options 鈥?is at no risk of blending in with ordinary traffic. Bamford鈥檚 client happened to be in Germany on business and got to see the handmade car come together. Bamford worked with the buyer and the manufacturers to make sure every detail was perfect, a level of attention that sometimes drove into his personal space. 鈥淎 lot of this work was done from home 鈥?in the parking lot at the school when I was dropping off the kids, or picking them up from school. Calling the client, banging out an e-mail,鈥?he said. It turns out the Porsche isn鈥檛 just a sweet-looking ride, it鈥檚 also a high-performance hybrid with both a combustion engine and two batteries. 鈥淵ou鈥檙e seeing the future of the automobile really,鈥?said Bamford. 鈥淣ot only is it, in terms of performance, a car that achieves what other cars can鈥檛 match.
