Ford and the Volkswagen Group have announced details of their partnership. The American and German giants will collaborate first on pickup trucks and commercial vehicles for the global market, and plan to develop electric vehicles, autonomous cars and mobility solutions together. VW and Ford sold 1.2 million vans and other light commercial vehicles in 2018, and the pickup truck sector has seen significant growth over the last five years. By sharing development costs, leveraging manufacturing capabilities and optimising cost efficiencies, Ford and VW expect improve their financial results by 023, becoming the commercial sector鈥檚 鈥渉ighest-volume collaboration鈥?in the process. As well as commercial vehicles, Ford and the Volkswagen Group have signed a memorandum of understanding (a nonbinding precursor to a contract) to 鈥渋nvestigate collaboration鈥?related to autonomous vehicles, electric vehicles and mobility services. Leaving the door open for further collaborations, both Ford and VW confirmed they would be 鈥渃onsidering additional vehicle programs in the future鈥? Ford鈥檚 president and CEO, Jim Hackett, said the alliance with VW would 鈥渄rive significant efficiencies and help both companies improve their fitness鈥? while VW Group鈥檚 CEO, Dr. Herbert Diess, said the two companies would harness 鈥渃omplementary market positions鈥? Porsche announced a recall for about 100,000 cars due to a rollaway risk. Models affected include the 2003-2010 Cayenne and 2010-2016 Panamera models. Not every single car is affected by the recall, so owners are encouraged to check their VIN numbers. The problem stems from a bushing that attaches the gear selector lever to the gearbox that may degrade over time, causing it to detach. This detaching of the bushing could cause all sorts of foibles, with the worst effect being that the gearbox is actually in a different gear than the lever's location says it's in. Porsche says one would be able to put the car in Park, take the key out, leave the vehicle, but the car wouldn't actually be in Park. That situation would be a major threat to anyone in the area. Thankfully, there have been no injuries, deaths or property damage stemming from this issue reported thus far. Apparently, the plastic used to make the bushing isn't sufficiently durable to hold up to all the years of shifting gears. Porsche first learned of the issue late in 2018 after several field incidents were documented. Their analysis led them to this recall. You'll want to be on the lookout for a letter from Porsche if you own one of these vehicles. Until then, Porsche suggests that owners use the parking brake every time they park until the issue is fixed.
Toyota will build a new hybrid car for Suzuki at its UK factory, the two brands have revealed while announcing their agreement on how they will collaborate in future. The two firms have been working on a memorandum of understanding since February 2017 and it has now been agreed that Toyota will supply its hybrid system to Suzuki on a global scale. Production of a new Corolla-based hybrid Suzuki model will begin in late 2020 at Toyota鈥檚 Burnaston factory in Derbyshire, while the powertrains will be built at the firm鈥檚 Deeside engine plant. The new model will be one of two Toyota-built Suzukis coming to Europe, with plans for one based on the Corolla estate and another on the RAV4 platform. Toyota will also be adopting newly-developed Suzuki powertrains for use in compact vehicles. These engines will be built with the support of Denso and Toyota at the latter鈥檚 factory in Poland.
