Taycan range

 

The Porsche Taycan is one of the most impressive electric cars on the market, combining performance, luxury and technology in a stunning package. But how far can it go on a single charge? And how does it compare to its rivals in terms of range and efficiency? In this blog post, we will answer these questions and more, based on the official EPA ratings and real-world tests.



The EPA range rating is the most widely used measure of electric car range in the US. It is based on standardized tests that simulate different driving conditions and scenarios, such as city, highway, cold weather, etc. The EPA rating is meant to reflect the average range that a typical driver can expect from an electric car in normal circumstances. However, it is not a guarantee, as many factors can affect the actual range, such as speed, terrain, climate, driving style, battery age, etc.



According to the EPA, the Porsche Taycan has a range rating of 212 miles for the base model, 227 miles for the 4S model, and 201 miles for the Turbo and Turbo S models. These numbers are lower than some of its competitors, such as the Tesla Model S, which has a range rating of 405 miles for the Long Range model and 348 miles for the Plaid model. However, the EPA rating does not tell the whole story, as some real-world tests have shown that the Porsche Taycan can actually exceed its EPA rating by a significant margin.

The results were surprising: the Taycan 4S achieved a range of 278 miles, beating its EPA rating by 51 miles or 22%. The Model S Long Range achieved a range of 320 miles, which was 85 miles or 21% lower than its EPA rating. This means that the gap between the two cars was only 42 miles or 13%, much smaller than what the EPA rating suggests.


Another example is the Edmunds EV range test, which also tested several electric cars on a mixed driving route that included city, highway and mountain roads. The results were similar: the Taycan 4S achieved a range of 323 miles, exceeding its EPA rating by 96 miles or 42%. The Model S Long Range achieved a range of 345 miles, falling short of its EPA rating by 60 miles or 15%. The difference between the two cars was only 22 miles or 6%, again much smaller than what the EPA rating indicates.


These tests show that the Porsche Taycan has a remarkable efficiency and consistency in its range performance, especially at higher speeds and in challenging conditions. The Tesla Model S still has an advantage in terms of absolute range, but it also suffers from more variability and degradation in its range performance. Therefore, depending on how and where you drive your electric car, you may find that the Porsche Taycan can actually match or even surpass the Tesla Model S in terms of real-world range.


Of course, range is not the only factor to consider when choosing an electric car. The Porsche Taycan also offers other benefits, such as superior handling, braking, comfort, quality and design. It also has a fast and reliable charging system that can replenish up to 80% of its battery in as little as 22 minutes using a high-power DC charger. The Tesla Model S has its own strengths, such as a larger trunk and frunk space, a more advanced infotainment system and software updates, and access to the extensive Supercharger network.


Ultimately, both cars are excellent choices for anyone looking for a high-performance luxury electric car. The Porsche Taycan may have a lower EPA range rating than the Tesla Model S, but it can deliver more than what it promises in real-world driving situations. The Tesla Model S may have a higher EPA range rating than the Porsche Taycan, but it can also fall short of what it claims in real-world driving situations. Therefore, you should not rely solely on the EPA rating to compare these two cars. Instead, you should consider your own driving needs and preferences, and test drive both cars to see which one suits you better.
