Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport Confirmed For Australia

Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport Confirmed For Australia

Porsche has revealed the new Cayman GT4 Clubsport, the first to wear the 鈥?18鈥?badge. It鈥檚 the second Cayman GT4 Clubsport, this time reborn for the 鈥?18鈥?Cayman and expected to continue the popularity of the variant. The Trackday version is built 鈥渇or ambitious amateur racing drivers,鈥?while a Competition version is aimed at those set to compete in national and international motorsport events. Both are 3.8-litre flat-six-powered, with 313kW on tap, but each feature different chassis and driver assistance setups that cater to amateur and professional levels of driving in the Trackday and Competition versions respectively. A Trackday Clubsport features fixed shocks, 鈥渇orgiving鈥?ABS, TC, and ESC programming, which is killable, as well as A/C, an escape hatch in the roof, a handheld fire extinguisher, and an 80-litre fuel tank. The Competition has three-way adjustable dampers, adjustable brake bias, an extra 35-litres of fuel tank, and has instead been built with an automatic extinguisher system. Porsche鈥檚 head of motorsport Fritz Enzinger says the previous generation sold rather well for a track-only racer, and expects the newer version to do the same. 鈥淭he new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport possesses significantly more racing genes than its successful predecessor,鈥?Enzinger says. 鈥淭he power of the engine has increased considerably. At the same time, we were able to increase the downforce and the cockpit is now even better suited to drivers鈥?needs.

The 4.0-litre boxer engine is only offered with a 6-speed manual transmission. The naturally aspirated motor can hurl the 718 Cayman GT4 and the 718 Spyder from 0-100kmph in 4.4 seconds. Top speed is rated at 301kmph for the Spyder and 304kmph for the Cayman GT4. The Cayman GT4 will also be offered with the track-focussed Clubsport package. Some say Porsche is one of the few brands that listens to car geeks and outright driving nerds out there. Honestly speaking, we can't agree more. The German brand has taken the wraps off the more hardcore versions of its 718 twins - the Cayman GT4 and the Spyder. What makes the two stand out is the new turbo-free 4.0-litre flat-six engine instead of the 2.5-litre turbocharged flat-four seen on the regular variants. Even merrier news though, is the return of the third pedal! The last-gen Cayman GT4, which was launched in 2015, came with a 3.8-litre flat-six motor coupled to a manual gearbox. But it has been three years since the Cayman dumped the glorious flat-six for a turbocharged flat-four motor.

Contrary to what was speculated, the engine is not the same high-revving 4.0-litre motor from the 911 GT3. Instead, Porsche took the engine from the current 911 Carrera, removed the turbo and added Piezo injectors and a cylinder deactivation system apart from a few other changes. Porsche has promised that the classic boxer sound will remain untouched. And that鈥檚 exactly what we want to hear. The next party piece is the 6-speed manual gearbox which comes with long ratios so that it can comply with stringent emission norms. We don't think that鈥檚 an issue as far as there are three pedals and a stick to play with. There is also an auto rev-matching feature that can be switched off at the driver鈥檚 discretion. And to emphasise the fact that the GT4 and Spyder are meant for the driver in you, Porsche has decided not to offer the two with its famed PDK gearbox.
