Look, you鈥檙e not going to have a bad time driving any modern two-door Porsche -- they鈥檙e all great cars. But every few years, Porsche hand-selects just the right ingredients from across its model range and blends them into something really spectacular -- something like the just-announced 2020 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4. We鈥檝e seen this basic idea before: Porsche built a manually operated ragtop-equipped Spyder and a GT4 coupe a few years using the 981-model Boxster and Cayman, and they were both fantastic cars. It鈥檚 the basic big-engine, small-car, hot-rod thing done the German way. What鈥檚 not to like? This time around, both cars get a 414-hp, 309 lb-ft 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six crammed into the 718鈥檚 superbly balanced rear-midengine chassis. A six-speed manual transmission is standard (whether a dual-clutch will even be offered remains to be seen) with an auto-blip rev-matching system that can, fortunately, be activated or deactivated at will. Both cars can rip from 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds en route to a top speed of 188 mph (for the GT4) and 187 mph (for the Spyder).
